Colonic Irrigation

(Colonic Hydrotherapy)

Sorry we've been let down again, so still don't have this service!

Until then the nearest we can recommend is:-

Natural Practices Clinic, Wilmslow, Cheshire

What is Colonic Irrigation?

Colonic Treatment is aimed at assisting the elimination of waste matter from the colon (large intestine) and to improve the muscle tone of the bowel. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a gently and safe solution to help the body eliminate toxins from the system. A flow of warm purified water is used to help flush the colon of accumulated and impacted faecal matter that can build up over time.

Colonic irrigation is sympathetically practiced by trained naturopaths and colonic hyrdotherapists and the utmost discretion is maintained throughout. The client may be accompanied by a chaperone if they prefer.

Who might have a Colonic & Why?

Although Colonic Hydrotherapy has been around for decades it has become increasingly popular in recent times due to an increase in media interest highlighting the benefits. The Channel 4 programme - You are What you eat with Dr Gillian McKeith in particular, with other celebrity approval including; Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson Duchess of York  and Kim Wilde.

Problems that someone may have colonic irrigation for include;

  • General body detoxification
  • Bowel conditions i.e. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), chronic constipation, Joggers Bowel, diverticulitis and chronic candida yeast infestation (also called candidaisis or bowel dysbiosis).
  • Conditions considered secondary to poor bowel function e.g. chronic fatigue, headaches, sinusitis, chest & lung complaints (i.e. asthma), poor skin health, recurrent urinary infections.

Short term Benefits of colonic treatment are often reported as improved bowel function, clearer skin, mental clarity and fewer headaches. Circulatory, immune and weight problems often also improve with colonic treatment, but are likely to take longer & further treatments.

What's involved in a Colonic Hydrotherapy session?

A detailed case history is taken before any treatment is started to ensure suitability to treatment, likely benefit and to screen for conditions where one would be advised to seek medical assistance. As such, this initial session usually lasts about an hour & half, and further treatments are about an hour.

The warmed, purified water is introduced through a specialise sterilised tube into the rectum at a low pressure. This is either from a gravity feed system or precisely regulated low pressure pump. The water is simultaneously allowed to drain out through a relief hole, with the waste matter, to maximise flow and minimise any build up of pressure.

The therapist then uses particular massage techniques to the abdominal area to stimulate the release of gas, mucous and impacted waste, enabling the elimination of these toxic materials.

What about diet and nutritional supplements?

Diet will be assessed and dietary advice given as appropriate.

A course of nutritional and herbal colon cleansing dietary supplements many be advised to aid the cleansing process. These usually include probiotics &/or prebiotics to support the population of 'friendly' gut bacteria and to replace those that get flushed out with the waste. Some nutritional supplements i.e. vitamins, minerals &/or anti-oxidants may be indicated to assist the process and improve general health and where candida overgrowth is suspected, then some antifungal dietary supplements may be advised.

Might I need any further treatments?

For optimum effect usually a short course is advised for most, but it really depends on the individual, their diet, lifestyle, general state of health, etc. To stay on top an occasional maintenance session may be recommended.

The choice of whether you have any further treatments is really up to you!
