Aromatherapy Massage FAQ's

Q

What is Aromatherapy?

A

Aromatherapy is the use of essential aromatherapy oils to help restore and maintain good health, usually combined with massage.  Essential oils are highly concentrated substances derived from plants.  Essential oils have many properties that can help to relieve and alleviate many conditions.

Q

The oils just smell nice then?

A

No. Aromatherapy is much more than a nice aroma!  The oils have complicated chemical structures and when specific essential oils are blended together the effect is very powerful. The oils do have wonderful aromas but they are usually chosen for their therapeutic benefits as well as the aroma.  The aroma does have an effect by stimulating the limbic area of the brain, but they also work by penetrating the skin and entering the blood system where they travel to the different systems of the body and have an effect.

Q

What are the different affects that the oils can have?

A

The effects can range from relaxing to stimulating with everything in between.  Some oils will aid concentration and memory, some will boost your energy levels, others will help you unwind and sleep.  They can work very well with emotional problems and can help people to move on in their lives, let go and even help you to make decisions and boost your confidence.

Q

Isn’t Aromatherapy just a beauty therapy?

A

No. Most beauty salons used ready-prepared blends, which are regarded by many as not being as powerful as a blend that your aromatherapist would make for your specific needs.  Aromatherapists study the uses and properties of approximately 50 essential oils during their training, as well as having qualifications in human anatomy and physiology and body massage.

Q What are the benefits of aromatherapy massage?
A

Aromatherapy massage has many benefits.  The use of essential oils combined with massage is deeply relaxing and is particularly beneficial for stress related conditions.

Aromatherapy is often found helpful for:

Relieving stress, anxiety, depression, aiding sleep, back ache, joint pain and stiffness, chest complaints, sinus problems, various skin conditions, digestive complaints, headaches, hormonal complaints (including PMT (PMS) & menopause symptoms), pregnancy, fatigue, poor concentration, etc.

Q What happens during a treatment?
A

After the aromatherapist has taken a full case history, including your general health, lifestyle, emotional well-being, diet and medical history you will be asked to undress for treatment.  Your modesty is important and you will be covered with towels and only the part of the body being worked on will be uncovered at any one time.

Q

How long does a treatment last and how often is treatment required?

A

Aromatherapy treatment lasts between 40 minutes and an hour and a half.  Some people choose to have the odd treatment every now and then, whilst others have regular weekly treatments or may come once a month.  A lot of people find that treatment once a month helps them keep on top of their particular condition.

Q

Do you treat male clients?

A

Yes.  Male clients are as welcome as female clients.  Many men benefit from receiving aromatherapy massage and we encourage as many as possible to try it.

Q

I am very self-conscious/shy and don’t like the thought of undressing, can you reassure me?

A

As mentioned above, your modesty is preserved at all times.  Therapists are used to working on clients and do not even ‘look’ at the body they are working on - as you would imagine - as they are concentrating on doing their job.  A lot of therapists tend to work intuitively.  Massage can also be carried out with the client seated on a chair and leaning forward onto the couch in a comfortable position if for any reason it is difficult for you to lie down.

Q Is it safe or are there any reasons not to have Aromatherapy?
A

Aromatherapy is safe for almost everybody.  There are some instances where the therapist may consider consulting your GP before to treat you. This would not be done without your permission and can be discussed at your first appointment.  Some aromatherapy oils are not advised for people with certain conditions, but the essential oils are used in minute amounts and adverse reactions are rare.
